AI Security Audit: Protect Your Business in 45 Min

One compromised password can wipe out months of client trust in an afternoon. This 45-minute AI-assisted security audit finds your biggest risks and gives you a fix list you can act on today.

Why Small Businesses Are Easy Targets

Freelancers and solopreneurs typically manage 30–80 online accounts, share login details with contractors, and store client data across three or four different platforms — all without a dedicated IT person. That combination makes you a low-effort target. A short AI security audit won't replace enterprise-level IT, but it will close the obvious doors attackers walk through first.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A list of every tool your business uses (pull from your bank statement — everything with a recurring charge).
  • Access to ChatGPT, Claude, or any capable AI assistant.
  • 30 minutes of uninterrupted focus — no clients, no notifications.
  • A free password manager account if you don't already use one (Bitwarden is a solid starting point).

Step 1 — Build Your Asset Inventory With AI (10 Min)

Paste your tool list into your AI assistant and use this prompt: "I'm a [freelancer / small-business owner] using these tools: [list]. Group them by risk level — high (stores payment or client data), medium (business comms), low (productivity). For each high-risk tool, list the top three security settings I should check." You'll get a prioritised checklist in under a minute. Most people discover two or three high-risk tools they hadn't thought about — scheduling apps that store client addresses, for example.

Step 2 — Audit Your Access Controls (10 Min)

Ask your AI: "Write me a 10-question checklist to audit who has access to my business accounts. Include questions about shared passwords, ex-contractors, email forwarding rules, and connected third-party apps." Work through each question honestly. The most common finding: a former VA or contractor still has login access to a live account. Revoking that takes two minutes but most owners never do it.

Step 3 — Generate a Password Policy in Plain English (10 Min)

You don't need a 20-page document. Prompt your AI: "Write a one-page password policy for a small business with 1–5 people. Cover minimum length, reuse rules, password manager use, and what to do if a breach is suspected. Keep it under 300 words and use plain language." Save the output as a PDF, store it in your shared drive, and send it to any contractor who touches your accounts. This single document is the most-skipped security step for solopreneurs — and the easiest to fix.

Step 4 — Draft a Breach Response Plan (10 Min)

Hope is not a strategy. Ask your AI: "Write a simple 5-step breach response plan for a small business. Cover: detecting the breach, containing it, notifying affected clients, resetting credentials, and reporting obligations. Assume I have no IT team." The output will flag that many regions require client notification within 72 hours of a data breach — something most solopreneurs don't know until it's too late. Store the plan somewhere you can reach it even if your main device is locked.

Step 5 — Check Your Public Exposure (5 Min)

Visit Have I Been Pwned and check every email address you use for business. Then ask your AI: "My email [address] appeared in a breach from [site name]. What are the three most important things I should do in the next 30 minutes?" You get a concrete, ordered action list — not generic advice. Change the affected password, enable two-factor authentication on that account, and check whether you reused that password anywhere else.

What a Finished AI Security Audit Gives You

  • A prioritised list of your highest-risk accounts.
  • A plain-English password policy ready to share with contractors.
  • A breach response plan you can actually follow under pressure.
  • A record of who has access to what — and who shouldn't anymore.
  • Peace of mind that the obvious doors are locked.
Security isn't about being unhackable. It's about being harder to crack than the next target.

Keep Your AI Tool Stack Tight and Safe
