AI Discovery Call Prep: Win More Clients in 20 Min

A well-prepped discovery call closes deals. A winging-it call wastes everyone's time — and usually ends with 'I'll think about it.'

Why Most Discovery Calls Fall Flat

Solopreneurs and freelancers often jump on a call with nothing but a name and an email address. They ask generic questions, miss obvious pain points the prospect's website spells out, and end up pitching the wrong service at the wrong price. The fix isn't more confidence — it's better preparation. AI gives you that in minutes.

What You Need Before the Call Starts

  • A one-paragraph snapshot of the prospect's business, industry, and size
  • Their top 2-3 visible pain points (pulled from their own website, reviews, or social)
  • 5-7 targeted discovery questions based on those pain points
  • A simple talk track: what you do, who you help, and the result you deliver
  • A list of likely objections and short, honest responses

That sounds like 90 minutes of research. With AI, it takes about 20.

Step 1 — Prospect Research With AI

Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity. Paste in the prospect's website URL (or key copy from it) and run this prompt: 'You are a sales consultant. Analyse this business and give me: 1) a 3-sentence company summary, 2) their likely top 3 operational or marketing pain points, 3) the type of buyer I am probably speaking to. Be specific, not generic.' Perplexity works especially well here because it can browse live pages and pull in recent news or LinkedIn data about the company.

Step 2 — Generate Sharp Discovery Questions

Once you have the pain point summary, follow up with: 'Based on these pain points, write 6 open-ended discovery questions I can ask on a sales call. Questions should uncover budget awareness, urgency, and decision-making authority without sounding like a script.' You will get questions that feel natural and go straight to the issues that matter. Edit two or three to match your voice — done.

Step 3 — Build a Tight Talk Track for AI Sales Call Prep

A talk track is not a script — it is a 60-second positioning statement you can drop at the right moment. Prompt: 'Write a 60-second positioning statement for a [your role] who helps [target client type] achieve [main result]. Tone: confident, conversational, no jargon.' Swap in your specifics and you have a crisp answer to 'So, what do you do?' that connects directly to the prospect's world.

Step 4 — Anticipate Objections

Ask AI: 'What are the 4 most common objections a prospect in [industry] raises when considering hiring a [your service]? For each objection, give me a one-sentence honest response that acknowledges the concern and pivots to value.' Print this or keep it open on a second screen. You will not be caught off guard.

Step 5 — The 5-Minute Review Before You Dial

  • Skim the AI-generated company summary one more time
  • Pick your top 4 discovery questions — do not read all 6, it feels like an interrogation
  • Check LinkedIn for the contact's job title and tenure (quick manual step, 90 seconds)
  • Set a clear call goal: qualify, not pitch
The goal of a discovery call is to listen your way to a yes — AI just makes sure you ask the right questions.

Real Numbers: What This Saves You

Manual prospect research for a single call typically takes 30-60 minutes if you do it properly — LinkedIn, website deep-dive, Google news, competitor context. The AI workflow above cuts that to 15-20 minutes with better output. If you run 8 discovery calls a month, that is roughly 4-6 hours back in your week, every month. More importantly, you show up prepared, which directly affects close rates. Buyers can tell within the first two minutes whether you did your homework.

Tools to Use for This Workflow

  • Perplexity AI — live web research on the prospect's business
  • ChatGPT or Claude — question generation, talk track, objection handling
  • Notion or Google Docs — paste everything into a single call-prep template you reuse
  • Otter.ai or Fireflies — record and transcribe the call so you can feed insights back into future prep
